Runway Report: f/w 10.11

So, I was looking through the images on style.com of the shows this fashion week and realized BLACK, LEATHER, FUR, and BUCKLES seem to taken over the scene at several shows.

Take the Alturzarra show, for instance.... The entire collection seemed to have a dominatrix/vampiress feel. Style.com made a reference to Edward Scissorhands, and I defnitely see the resemblance.

In my opinion, the Altuzarra show was FIERCE this season. There was SO much intensity and drama! The collection was very gothic and even a little haunted... while clicking through my style.com slide show I didn't think it could get any more vampire-like and then I saw this:HOLY....moly. Velvet? I don't know how I feel about it. (Actually, I do know....*cough*partycity*cough*) Otherwise, I love the concept of the full length cape. Verrry amazing. I give major props to anyone who wears one when it's not Halloween, even if it's velvet.

On the other hand, the images from the Lacoste show give a completely different vibe..... sort of retro 80's meets cuddly snow bunny. There were lots of creams and vibrant primary colors in the collection. And, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw models on the runway SMILING! YESSS!!! The death stare is always going to be chic, but after seeing a lot of the BLANK stares it's nice to see more of a variety of facial expressions.

I'm glad to see happiness is in style season.

A Romantic Campaign for a Romantic Holiday...

So in honor of Valentines Day, take a look and enjoy this incredibly beautiful campaign for Ralph Lauren's new fragrance, "Romance." I decided to live vicariously through this ad today...

I love this campaign because it is just so sexy and classy at the same time... But then again that basically describes everything made by Ralph Lauren.

Women-
The woman's version is sweet, soft, and romantic. Awwww!

Men-On the other had the Men's version is animalistic and hot. I would say this basically could be used to describe the Freudian theory about the human "id." hahaa

Its funny how the ad changes based on who the audience is.

A Tribute to Alexander McQueen

Yesterday on February 11th 2010, the fashion industry was devastated to hear the terrible news that British fashion icon Alexander McQueen was found dead in him apartment in London earlier that morning. The industry could not possibly think of a more saddening way to start off fashion week. McQueen may be gone, but his innovations in design and style will live on forever.

It is safe to describe McQueen's style as being over the top, with a somewhat edgy/whimsical appeal. His designs carried the common threads of beauty, strong silhouettes, and dramatic features.

Here are some examples of Alexander McQueen's workMcQueen's designs were favorites among superstars such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Madonna. Lady Gaga even wore one of McQueen's designs in her "Bad Romance" music video.
Please note Gaga's 12 inch armadillo shoes. This style was one of McQueen's signature pieces which has taken the industry by a storm.

McQueen will be missed by all. His influence over fashion was a great one. It is a sad day when the life of someone as talented as he is is cut short.

Meggasus is Calling it Now...Breakout Faces of F/W 10.11

It's that time again!! Today is the first official day of NY fashion week and one of the most exciting parts of it is seeing which new faces will be the breakout stars of the season. Who will get the Calvin Klein exclusive? Who will open Prada? Who will walk the most shows? Who will be Russell Marsh's favorite new girl? (Oh, and in case your didn't know, Russell Marsh is GOD in the modeling world....he casts BCBG, Prada, Miu Miu etc).

So, I'm going to make a few predictions on which new faces will rock the fashion world this season. I'm basing this on gut feeling so..........here it goes. The first girl has practically zero hype right now, from what I can tell......but I still really like her and I'm rooting for her!

1) Mariel Soehner @ Ford
Why Mariel? Her show card really stuck out to me when browsing Ford's show package on models.com. I LOVE the harsh, platinum blond hair combined with her soft facial features. She photographs beautifully and her body looks amazing for the runway.

2)Kristina Krivomazova @ Marilyn


Why Kristina? Well, first of all she's with Marilyn ....not that I'm bias or anything...and the board there never fails to bring us a few new stars each season. Given that she did the Calvin Klein pre-fall shows, she has a good chance of being in Calvin this season!! Such an effortless beauty.

3) Amy Greenhough @ OneI would post Amy's show card if you could actually tell what she looked like from it, but you can't. (Why did One Management do that?) So here are some poloroids instead! I love this girl...she's just so cool. Her bone structure is amazing and her hair makes her really memorable!

Well, there you have it...my picks for this upcoming season. What do you think?

Vogue Boston; "Ripped Jeans, Chains and Breaking Stuff"

For the blog's most recent photo shoot, we collaborated with the amazingly talented, fashion photographer Miss. Emily Tebbetts. For this shoot only three things were definite from the start...messy hair, red lips and ripped jeans.

Check, check and check.

The rest sort of fell in place perfectly as Miss Emily and I stumbled upon scenery that seemed to be sent down from the photo shoot gods. Chains, graffiti and broken glass equals totally hardcore and perfect for what we were about to do.

That last picture is my favorite by far. The intensity is through the roof.
That's right, I could take on the karate kid for sure... In HEELS.

Ok so I calmed down for the next few photos...
Katie-Lu wears a "leather" jacket from Forever 21, and a black, lace top from the Thrift Store. Jeans are Earnest Sewn and ripped from tripping on the side walk a few years back... Yeah I recently re discovered them and realized that the rip actually made them a lot cooler now. I'm glad I never threw them out...

Hippies, Road Hogs and Circus Freaks Made High Fashion

So I had some free time on my hands today and as usual I found myself browsing through the hundreds of fashion photography prints on condenaststore.com. Amazing website by the way. You should really check it out... it's VERY expensive for poor college students like myself, but hey, I can dream right?

Anyways I stumbled upon this picture and it intrigued me.

There is just so much to look at in this photo. Twelve beautiful women, all very elegant. The longer you stare at this photo, the more you notice. This was definitely not your typical fashion editorial. Allow me to point out what I initially noticed...

-The women in this photo range in age, definitely different from the case in most modern day editorials.

-None of these women are interacting with each other.

-Only two of the models appear to be looking at the camera.

-They all look as though they are dressed for separate occasions.

and my favorite part of this photo...

-They all have cheek bones that could cut glass!

Who took this amazing portrait, you ask?...
None other than the infamous photographer Irving Penn. I should have known.

Yup, that's him. Dark and mysterious.

Irving Penn was a photography genius. As I researched more, I found many patterns in his work. He tended to use simple backdrops which forced the viewer to really focus on his subjects, everything from their clothes to their facial expressions. Also, he used natural lighting (sunlight) and seemed to always carefully arrange his subjects.

With a little help from google images, these were some other photos taken by Irving.





Although these are clearly portraits not fashion editorials, they still look like they could be straight out of the pages of Vogue. I love how this man could somehow manage to make a band of hippies, a group of road hogs and a bunch circus freaks look chic and totally high fashion. It just goes back to the common theme of our blog, which is that anything can be chic if you consider your life a Vogue editorial.

Trenchcoat Twins Turn Style Icons

Katie-Lu and I have looked up to Mary-Kate and Ashley since we were old enough to turn on the television. Growing up we were official members of their fan club and watched every Trenchcoat Twin video we could get our little hands on. I still remember the beginning of their mystery movies; they would be in their attic examining things like giant tarantulas with over sized magnifying glasses until suddenly, their brightly colored phones would ring at the same time and they'd answer by saying, "Olsen and Olsen mystery agency....we'll solve any crime by dinner time." Soooo classic.

Nowadays, it looks like the Olsens have traded in their over-sized magnifying glasses for over-sized sunglasses... and we are even more obsessed with them!

We even dressed up as them for Halloween a few years back...

Well, in honor of the the Olsens, here are FIVE REASONS why you should love the them as much as we do:

1) First of all, the girls are style icons. The press may bash their "Bag-Lady" look, but true fashion insiders appreciate their unique sense of style. In all seriousness, they can do no wrong....ripped tights, fur in the summer, baggy layers, etc. Nobody holds a candle to their self expression and creativity . (And no, don't say Lady Gaga does. She dresses the way she does for different reasons *cough*attention*cough*). Some celebrities hire stylists, but obviously these girls can do without.


2) Number two is that they are twins (obviously)! Not only that, but they actually do love each other and appreciate the fact they are twins. There is nothing more disappointing to Katie-Lu and I than seeing a pair of twins that don't get along and value the special bond that twins can have.

Both girls have stated in interviews that they are best friends.

3) Another reason to love the Olsen twins is that they are not your average celebrity designers. This is because they have actually earned their respect in the fashion industry. (Don't even get me started with Lindsey Lohan). Their clothing label The Row, and its line, Elizabeth and James, have earned the girls enough credibility to join the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America this past June. This accomplishment now places them among other highly esteemed designers such as Diane Von Furstenberg, Marc Jacobs and Tommy Hilfiger.

4) Fourth reason is they don't even bother acting anymore....it's like they're already over the Hollywood scene and have moved on to bigger and better things. At the moment, they are focusing on their fashion careers only. So chic.

5) Fifth and final reason...lets be honest...who doesn't love Full House?
